Thanks all for the info. One more: I’m flying with the wife and kid. Should I pay for seat selection to keep us together? Really would prefer we don’t get split up. Or do they make a reasonable effort to keep families together.

If there is anything you want with Spirit, pay for it. That being said, if you want to sit together on any airline it's always a good idea to pay for it but on spirit, considering the clientele and who you might be sitting next to it's almost necessary.

They make an effort to keep families together (they may depend on how young the child is though). One time they split us all up and I was able to call and get us seated together at no charge.
