30 years ago "centrally planned economy" was considered communist goods. Now these guys are begging for it.

They want to go back to the Roosevelt era but only for "real" Americans (am I wrong)? Orban's Hungary would be their ideal, I think, only without the EU part.
The protectionist approach didn't work then and it won't work now. Neither will a pre-Nixon/ Bretton-Woods-style planned economy work in a world where we don't produce anything and labor has less and less value thanks to AI and automation.
Unfortunately, I think we will be experimenting with digital balkanization, which could rightly be seen as a form of protectionism, vis-a-vis China. Globalization is over. The new world will be more segmented, and both Biden and Trump seem to agree on policies that point us in that direction.
