So one diesel and multiple generators and/or switch gear? At least on the boats I've been on, the diesel would have its own generator(s) so that it could run independent of ship's power, and there are auxiliary steering systems, even down to verbal communications from the bridge to the engine room so that ship can navigate if there are systems failures. It's a lot of stuff to go wrong at just the right time.

I know one thing. I am not crossing the ocean in a ship with only one engine for propulsion. Neither am I going to insure one if I ever get into the insurance business, or loan anyone any money to build one if I am ever in the business of loaning money.
