this sounds like what happens occasionally in Mobile Bay. It's called a Jubilee, when large abnormal amounts of fresh water empties into the salt water of Mobile Bay, the sealife -- fish ,crab , and sometimes shrimp become disoriented and become beached. The residents along the coast ring the bells of a Jubilee and go along the coast to scoop everything up.
It's great fun if you happen to be there at the right time.
