Love San Clemente (it has a cool surfer town vibe) but you cannot go wrong with Del Mar/Solana Beach. The Bringantine overlooking the racetrack has some of the best fish tacos anywhere and there is some shopping, cool beach bars and breakfast places in both towns if that's your thing. Huge fan of Poseiden in Del Mar.
Yep, San Clemente up to San Juan Capistrano are cool little beach towns that don't feel as "plastic" as Dana Point, Laguna Beach or Newport Beach.
We hit Del Mar and Solana after spending several trips in La Jolla and just found them more enjoyable.
Someone mentioned Huntington Beach...no. Unless you like a nuclear power plant as part of your beach views.
OP, stop at Bear Flag Fish Co while you're there!

Oh hell yes. I always hit up the one at Crystal Cove in Newport Coast but there is also a location in Newport Beach.
