Yes, and there's a recent economic literature about this starting with the observation that beliefs heavily influence behaviors, but there's a catch: people can only convince themselves to believe things they can find good reasons for. When lots of people want to believe similar things (like on this board), it creates what they call "rationalization markets", social systems where people try to come up with reasons to believe things in exchange for money or social approval.
