One big reason, it’s China you nitwit. They’re not going this for the consumer they’re doing it to hurt us. Thus why you protect those who aren’t enemies and prevent the enemy from doing so.

Let's step back for a second.
What is happening here is Trump is the first politician in a long time (probably in most people's lives including mine) that we have heard using tariffs as a tool to execute trade agreements. No fine points are being argued by Trump other than he will "hit them with a 100% tariff" which is just bloviating. Trump is just setting the negotiating framework. One thing about Trump that he is consistent about is making good deals. He is always talking about deals. This is just part of it.
