Glad I was wearing a hard hat one night while roughnecking and tripping pipe. Derrick hand needed help up on the boards and the driller told me to help him so I jumped on the elevators for a ride up in the derrick instead of climbing. This rig had shorter bales "the long arms between the blocks and elevators" than the rig I was used to working on so when I stood up I about knocked myself out hitting my head on the bottom of the hook.

I bet you were tied off to the block for that too

...... No safety lines this was still old school roughnecking.

I hated using derrick climbing belts. I worried more about falling while trying to take my belt off and back on. You get 2/3 of the way up climbing you're too tired to be scared of heights.

Climbing belts were fun though coming down the derrick. Because of the counter weight you used your hands and feet as brakes on the outside of the ladder while free falling " gliding" down instead of climbing down.
