Probably wanted to bring in a new QB without all the background noise about Fields.
Even still, a 6th round pick for Fields is an absolute steal for Pitt

Don’t want him on the roster when they draft their new franchise guy. Gotta give him a chance to learn the new team’s playbook as well as get him out the building
