How the hell do you tear down a house without quadruple checking it's the right one, and that the person telling you to do it has the authority to do so?
This is the third or fourth time recently that I have heard about this kind of a thing happening. Even obviously vacant houses in some state of disrepair should still have some safeguards in place to prevent an accidental demolition.
Several years ago there was at least one case where a house was in very good shape and obviously occupied and some workers still destroyed it. The fact that the home had no obvious problems with it, a well-manicured lawn and landscaping, and the entire inside of the home still had furniture and personal items on display, etc. wasn't enough to sound off alarm bells to the wrecking crew. I think that a neighbor even told them that someone still lived in the house. Needless to say that the homeowner was in for quite a surprise when they returned from the office that day.

To me, that piece of land is worth more now with a house I don’t have to pay to tear down.
I seriously doubt anyone had lived there for some time.
Not saying this is right, but silver lining.
