I've put a combined 290k miles on two volkswagen cars with zero issues so far. Both jettas and both fairly abused.

No way in hell I'd let a dealership touch my car. Maintenance is all DIY on schedule with OEM parts and when I inevitably need a repair it will be either DIY or independent shop.

European cars are if you are militant about maintenance and get a stick shift and don't bend over for the dealer service.

I personally feel like you get a far nicer car for your money than with other brands.
