Be honest, we don’t have a lot to complain about so far this season. I
Know some of us will be disappointed if we don’t go deep in the playoffs, but still

Team had been hot lately, but Willie made some questionable decisions in the first half of the season.

He’s got a loaded roster. Hes done a good job. A better coach and we’d be sitting in the top 3 easily. He lost us a bunch of games in the first half of the season.

Let’s just hope that’s continued growth as a young coach bc what we have seen lately has been fantastic.

This is said so flippantly and I just don't see it.
A top 3 seed would basically mean we're the 1 seed considering how close those 3 are right now.

The new medical staff and Borrego were extremely important offseason additions to the staff and organization. Green still has some deficiencies due to his inexperience but some of the glaring issues on the offensive side of the ball has been addressed and his ability to get his players to buy in has always been a big strength of his.
If we can keep Borrego on the staff with him for a couple of years, Green could develop into a high end coach with some more experience in the playoffs. We're slowly getting where we want to be and we are starting to really get the buy in from BI and Z.

We're on par with Minny with better coaching decisions so that checks out IMO.

Again... said very flippantly with no data to back that up.
This idea that our team is the only one of the top 6 teams in either conference that is being held back by its coach is an odd one. Hate to break it to you guys, but every team has lost multiple games they should've won. There is no perfect coach.

Do you have it? I'd be interested to see it and change my opinion accordingly.

Shel will dig that right up for you. For me, it’s like porn. I know it when I see it.

NBA advanced clutch stats for one. This team is not very good in clutch situations with a 10-13 record with bottom 10 off and def ratings.

quote:I don't think there's any exact science or data on "games lost that you should have won" but I'd start with a league worst winning percentage in games decided by 3 points or less. We're 1 of only 2 teams with only 1 win of 3 points or less, the other being the Pistons.

Or the fact that we have the 3rd worst Net rating in the clutch, only ahead of the Pistons and Wizards.
You could argue it's a player and fit type problem and there may even be some truth to that, but with a team this good to be hovering around 2 teams that are a combined 21-106 in the clutch, I have to think some of that will fall on coaching as well.
How many more wins would we have if we were league avg there? Or just 10th worst even?

I can't stand Willie's ATOs and (lack of) adjustments out of halftime, but I also feel like our players just get too tense in close game situations too. Some of that definitely falls on the coach, but it also falls on the player leadership of the team (CJ and to a lesser extent, BI deserves some blame for that as well). Zion, despite being in his 5th year, is just completely green when it comes to those situations.

There is 3.8 seconds on the clock, Nelson inbound down by one. Who do you want taking that shot? Do you trust officials to call it correctly when Zion is fouled? Do you trust him in the clutch from the foul line? Would we get hero ball from CJ or Ingram?

Stop the insanity.
The only reason we aren't in the top 3 is due to Zion not being in shape to start the season. That's it. Willie's isn't an elite coach, but we don't consider anyone an elite coach until you got a title/finals app on your resume.
If Zion was in shape to start the year the whole fricking identity of this team is established much earlier and it would.fix.every.fricking.issue
Including the crunch time stuff

Some of it definitely has to fall on coaching. I mean there were several late game situations where we were sticking Zion in the corner. There simply is no justification for that. When you’re completely neutering a major offensive weapon, it’s plain idiotic. There was also a breakdown from Zach Lowe (I think), showing just how stationary we were in late game situations. BI was given the ball and four players stood around and watched (with Zion by himself in the corner). That’s simply not good coaching. This board of course blamed BI, but I’m not sure what you can expect him to do in that situation. If it happens once or twice maybe it’s simply the players failing to execute, but it happening several times has to fall at least somewhat on coaching. I feel like Willie’s rotations have significantly improved (with good health and the fact Zion can play 30+ minutes a night), but the late game failures are a definite concern.

The team is deep with NBA players but it’s kinda weird to say this about a team with zero all stars. Will likely have zero All NBA players. Herb should finally make all-defense. That’s not exactly what I would call a “loaded roster”.

I don’t think Willie is amazing but 80-90% of teams’ fans are unhappy with their coaching
I’m really not sure who is this clear upgrade that gets us to a top 3 seed

That doesn't make it not true. This is arguably the most talented roster in the West top to bottom. It's more talented than the Wolves and the Thunder. I love Willie, and he's still growing as a head coach, but he's not very creative and he takes longer than most to figure out his rotations

Both of those teams have a better player than anyone on the Pelicans.
We're deeper, but I'm taking SGA or ANT over Zion or BI until proven otherwise. MVP-caliber players trumps all.
