The explanation about how they were so advanced but that they were afraid humanity would advance further than them in just 400 years felt a bit flimsy to me. And confusing at times.

Right. I guess we have to ignore certain things. Like why did they even tell the humans about their plan? Just get there in 400 years and wipe them out. Now earth is preparing for a war that they never knew was coming. Just mess with human’s science for a few centuries.

Do you read a lot of science fiction? It is a fairly common trope. It is a play on the idea that we are out of control as a species and will be the engineer of our own demise as we are not mature enough to handle our uncontrolled development of weapons/technology. The flip side of that is that our rapid advancement as a species from sticks and stones to nuclear weapons is what will protect us and/or make us seen as a threat from alien species as we aren't mature enough as a species to handle the technology we develop.
