One of the finest dinners I have ever eating in Birmingham was at a place called the Prarie Spit Fire Grill. If it still open I highly recommend this place. It was on hwy 280 aroud the Amerisuites hotel.
They had some of the best crab cakes I have ever eating as an appitizer along with some duck tacos.
It has been a couple of years since we ate there so I do not know if they are still open.
Dreamland is also a good place to go for Ribs.

What kind of eats are you looking for, just casual or some of the finer?

I used to stay in that Amerisuites, now a Hilton, all the time until my daughter bought a house with a spare bedroom, I don't think I ever saw this place, where is it?
I like to recommend Mudtown Cafe, TigerAttorney, just went and liked it too. It's right near the Summit off 280 & 459. My daughter tells me Jim & Nicks is not as good as it once was.

If you are looking for upscale. Try Botega, Highlands, Hot n Hot, Cobb Lane. If you are looking for more casual but still somewhat nice, try Surin (thai), Leonardos (italian), my mind is going blank. BBQ = Dreamland, Miss Myras, Uncle Sams, Tin Roof. Quick cheap food but good = 5 Guys Burgers, Firehouse Subs, Milos. Late night food = Formagios, Als, Purple Onion.

about a half mile down 280 south of Amerisuites. The spit fire grill was on the right side of 280.
If I remeber correctly it was around the Superior grill on the oppiste of the highway.
I was in b'ham for a business meeting and my regional manager took all of there for dinner. It was a great meal.
We had appitizers of crab cakes and duck tacos. our entrees was a fine ribeye with garlic patotoes and asparagus spears.

casual. im heading out there by myself, so im most likely going to get take out, but im not apposed to sitting down and eating by myself, just nothing fancy.

Surin does good take out. The Crab Angels are good for an appetizer. The sushi is good. The Ka Proud Lamb is good, as well as the Soft Shell Crab w/ Asparagus. This is Thai/Sushi.
Jim And Nicks is overrated BBQ but the cheese biscuits and sides are $.

If you get to 280 and dare fight the traffic, Petrucelli's is decent Italian. Superior Grill is ok. California Pizza Kitchen is good too.

Hmmmm...my daughter lives close to there and they get takeout frequently, they love it, so I smile and enjoy being with them. If you are used to plain tomato sauces, you'll like it. If you like more herbal sauces, as you'll find in areas with Mediterranean descendants, you'll be bored.

That's why I said decent. I'm not much into Italian though. Maybe cuz I've never really had good Italian?

Prairie Fire Grill is still open. Also, if you want sushi and decide to go to Surin be sure to go to the original - Surin West downtown. Surin 280 sucks.
Where are you staying ... I can give you some better suggestions if I know whereabouts you'll be and what you're looking for.
Also, Dreamland is overrated, there are much better places than Superior for Mexican and CPK is a chain.

im staying at the la quita inn in homewood. ill have a car and time to kill, so any suggestions within driving distance would be great , espeically bbq places.

Then you're not too far from downtown.
For delicious sandwiches and nachos, etc., you should go to Momma Goldberg's deli in downtown Homewood. Be sure to get the nachos. Doritos, pepperjack cheese and jalapenos ... doesn't sound good but they're heavenly.
Zoe's is a chain now but it started here in Birmingham, so I feel OK recommending that for something lighter as well.
There's a Full Moon on Valley Avenue that I like, and of course Jim and Nick's 11th Ave. Grill is great for bbq. Someone else suggested dreamland, but I've never been a huge fan.
For Pizza, try Dave's over in Homewood as well.
Five Points Grill (downtown) is good to go sit at and watch the people, and the food's not bad. It used to be much better, but it's still pretty good.
Also, Cocina Superior is right by you and another place you might want to try. Also, if you don't mind driving in to Hoover or Pelham, the other two good Mexican places I would recommend are Margarita Grill (Hwy 31 and 119) or Iguana Grill (On Lorna Road, right in the Middle of GuadalaHoover).
That's it for places off the top of my head to eat. If you're looking for bars too, I'm your girl.
ETA: Oh, and Sneaky Pete's is a good place for Hot Dogs and Hamburgers.

Milo's is a local hamburger chain that is very popular....apparently living over red dirt kills your taste buds.
