At the beginning of the Russia Civil War, the Bolsheviks opened the prisons. The Tsar had long before released all the political prisoners, what was left were men convicted of capital crimes, like rape and murder. The Bolsheviks unleashed these people on ordinary Russians, the end result was bloody terror.
