Read the article. Supposedly Herridge got the info from a confidential source associated with the FBI. FBI had been investigating Chen and then dropped the case sometime in 2016. Herridge ran the report in 2017.

Chen had been running a school that supposedly attracted ex military types to attend. Chen was a naturalized US citizen but "forgot" to divulge that she was former PLA. The Americans attending the school were helped via tuition assistance via the DOD. FBI closed the case in 2016 saying they had nothing on her which is probably them saying they were told to drop it by either someone in the executive end or someone at DOD in the SECDEF office or the NSA. Herridge is being used to smoke out the source which she is resisting. This ain't about the FBI so much as Defense and the NSA. Probably at least a few million dollars was paid to Chen by the DOD and she probably found a way to share the "student" info with the ChiComs.

That's where you jump the shark. E.g., who was VPOTUS at that time? Who was AG? Director of the FBI? In 2016, the FBI was operating nefariously, and basically untethered. Leadership and its motivations were questionable. Could it not be that someone within the Bureau wanted to blow it up?
