That makes no sense. That's like going backwards 40 years.
More like 10 or not at all.
VFA-204 was flying mostly alpha models from the early 80s and I think they started getting Charlies in the 2010s from folded up squadrons. Maintenance on the legacy hornets per hour far exceeds that for the F-5s combined with a lack of spare parts. The legacy hornet fleet was absolutely ground down from the GWOT.
Navy bought retired F-5s and parts from the Swiss Air Force. They’re just as capable for the role as the 18s. Finding other spare parts shouldn’t be hard at all considering how much the F-5 was exported worldwide. Not to mention that the F-5 is kinda the older cousin of the Hornet anyway.

It's like 23, but forgive me for just guessing.
Why not just get them superhornets though? Why get them an aircraft that can't even land on a carrier(not that they do much of that, but its a navy unit right)?
Or did they just transition them to a training unit or something?

I think it’s this. F-5 is only used for training for the US armed forces. F-35s come to town to practice against them. Modern day Top Gun.

Rivers are F-18s, when the F-15s used to come in their callsign was Jazz and they had Bayou Militia painted on their tail.
