It definitely was that way though. If you didn’t have a CCL, the ammunition had to be separated from the firearm and the firearm could not be within arms reach. Didn’t necessarily have to be in the trunk, but could not be reachable. If you had a CCL, you could have it loaded and located wherever you wanted.

The elimination of the permit requirement did away with that.

I have lived here nearly my whole life. I'm in my 60s.
I have always carried a loaded pistol in the glove box or console and a lot of times a loaded rifle too.
Pulled over numerous times, told the cop about the weapons, no problems.
Maybe if you are an a-hole, things may be different.

I assume many cops didn’t enforce the law, but it was still the law.

I’m pretty positive that the law was as I’ve stated, as backed up by two other Alabama residents and the wording of the 2nd Amendment website I quoted.

“As of January 1, 2023, Alabama does not require a permit or license to carry a loaded handgun in any vehicle.”

So that means that before then, it was illegal.

Never heard of this requirement in Alabama.

I suppose that could be the case, but I never really knew anyone to have a problem and most everyone I know always carry.
The only person I ever knew, to get in trouble for a gun in his truck was drunk on Wheeler wildlife refuge with a .22 derringer in his truck. A game warden got him.

Previously, the state required a concealed carry license to carry a firearm in a vehicle, except on the possessor’s land or at his or her fixed place of business unless the person was permitted by law to possess a handgun and it was kept unloaded and stored in a locked compartment or container that was in or affixed securely to the vehicle and out of reach of the driver or any passengers.

I guess this argument is settled.

How did y’all not know this? I’m a fricking Louisiana resident and I knew it.

Probably because we don't live in Louisiana where's it's required to tell them you have a firearm.

I've never had my car searched so it's never came up.

Like I said, I guess many LEO’s didn’t enforce it, but it was the law.

Alabama baws, I am disappoint.

Wrong. I looked it up a few years ago because I was curious; Alabama was very strict

Well I’d rather it be legal to carry a loaded firearm and tell them I have one, than having it be illegal to have one and have to lie about it.

Why are y’all defending that stupid law just because they didn’t enforce it vigorously?

It appears that the law stood for so many years because most residents didn’t even know it was the law. That’s a sorry excuse.

Why care about something that doesn't affect you?
It never had any effect on my life.

I didn't have any reason to lie as I have always had a permit.

You do, but not everyone does.

This law made everyone else a criminal.

It's always better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6

If you think that part was stupid wait until you figure out that open carry was legal but the moment you straddled a motorcycle it became concealed carry

WTF Alabama? I was shocked when I read this years ago. I never followed the law as I drove to Florida several times with a loaded pistol in the vehicle.

What exactly do you want? An apology from Governor Meemaw?

Did it ever?
If it did, I could maybe understand your issue here, but if it didn't, why worry about it?
Don't we all have enough real problems, without worrying about coulda woulda crap?

Yes, she should apologize to all Alabama citizens and those that traveled through the state for making them criminals by simply protecting themselves.

The fact that y’all just say, “Well I never had a problem with it” shows the apathy that is rampant in this country.

Not enforcing an unconstitutional law isn’t good enough in my book. It should have never, ever been the law.

It’s called a discussion dude.

Stating facts isn’t being argumentative.
