I realized how it looked after I reread it. I was meaning "The reason we started seeing more scenes of racism from the media in the 1950's" as opposed to "The reason racism picked up in the 1950's."

Based on the the OP's question, I thought the simpler statement with less context would get the basic point across easier. That is until I reread it and had a probably similar reaction as you
