The crane flies and mayflies feed all sorts of critters when they swarm. I've even seen squirrels grabbing dying mayflies from the ground before.

Speaking of mayflies...
I've seen mayflies throughout the winter here...either I've never noticed until now, or they're confused
what I'm seeing in large numbers now is crane flies
and calligraphers
