I could be wrong, and obviously there were great golfers in that era, but I think one of the reasons it was more top heavy is because the bottom of the fields were so much worse. You used to not be able to make a living as a golfer unless you were one of the best in the world, limiting the depth of talent.

It’s the same reason IMO why you’re more likely to have a good winner at one of these signature PGA Tour events or a LIV event. But instead of there not being a big field at those events, the bottom of the field at majors in the day stunk.
