You wouldn’t tell your son that he is the prize? You’d want him to subjugate his needs to her needs ? And you wouldn’t want him to improve himself so he is a catch? Or was yours just an emotional reaction to what any loving parent would advise his son- be a strong man, make something of yourself, know your worth, work on becoming competent, choose a woman wisely , don’t settle for less than you deserve, remember the importance of your masculinity in the world, etc.
