From the trailer it sounds like 2 different ideas from the storm chasers. 1 was trying to study it, 2 could very well lean in to what was learned from 1 and now taking it a step further to "destroy" a tornado. Sure you could argue they are trying to cash grab off of the name, but if they build off what they learned from 1 to try and do something never before done in this one then this actually seems like a legit sequel

This is a very loose sequel that takes place in the same universe but with characters who are mostly unrelated to the original film. There will be callbacks, cameos, and minor characters from the original playing support roles, but that's about it.

This could have easily been its own film with no connection to a franchise. You can't make money like that, however. So they have to attach a familiar name to the project.
