there have been others since then too, almost all involving gambling

a crooked NBA ref?

crooked ref was the whistleblower.
he alleged it went way higher up the chain all the way to the league office.

there are multiple instances of the NBA applying rules and suspensions based on what is good for the league rather than unilaterally.

that Kings/Lakers series in early 2000's looked fixed as shite to make sure it went the full 7.
Games 5 and 6 are well known to have been at the center of those allegations.

The NBA has long been rumored to have rigged the Draft lottery for the Knicks the year Patrick Ewing came out.

multiple NBA players have come out and voiced their opinion that games are rigged using the officials in the last decade or so.

Boxing has long been widely discussed as being dirty and fixing fights.

I don't follow hockey, so can't comment on that league.

and lets not pretend like there haven't been some really controversial calls in big NFL games that "coincidentally" benefitted the team or player that would be in the league's best interest.

Entire leagues being rigged in the modern day? Nah.

with the amount of money involved now?

we're talking about billions and billions of dollars at stake.
that's just in sponsorship, TV, and tickets.

throw in the gambling (an estimated $23 BILLION on just last night's game) and we're probably getting up into the neighborhood of $100 Billion per year.

and who gets how much and from where is largely dependent upon the outcomes of these games.

that's a scenario just begging for corruption and shadiness.
I think it would be naive to NOT think it was not just possible, but extremely likely that somebody somewhere is pulling every string they can to manipulate outcomes.

Is it the league itself? gamblers? TV networks? whatever is left of the Mafia?
hell if I know.

but there is waaaaaaay too much coin at stake to just leave it to chance.
