Why shouldn’t Russia invade a geopolitical opponent who refuses to defend themselves? Why should the U.S. GAF about protecting a country that refuses to protect itself?

Trump isn’t saying anything even remotely reckless or stupid here. The only people being reckless or stupid are the NATO nations refusing to hold up their side of the treaty (I would say the media is being reckless and stupid, but we all know that they will face no consequences for their blatant lies and misrepresentations of easily verifiable information. The public already largely ignores them and recognizes their screeds as nothing more than government propaganda propping up the current administration). These nations are akin to roommates in an apartment refusing to pay their agreed share of the rent and then being shocked when the roommate who actually pays threatens to leave or kick them out.
