I spent almost 9 years in NATO organizations. Trump is right, most NATO nations are not honoring the financial commitments they’ve made. Why do they get to pick and choose what commitments to honor? I can also say with authority that many of our NATO partners have caveated their military support to NATO operations, in Europe and Afghanistan, by limiting the actions and risks they were willing to take.

And other “NATO partners” parcel out their military funds to the EU, hence hedging against US support for NATO as well as sometimes divergent European interests.
