The satellite phones I have dealt with were not very effective at all. They may be better now, but we had some at work when Katrina hit New Orleans.
I think the latest iPhone actually has some level of satellite messaging for use in emergencies. I believe it will send an SOS to emergency authorities and notify your loved ones that you have sent the message.

It does, but uses the globalstar network. Iridium (Garmin devices, etc) covers every corner of the globe.
