I hope he gets into more detail about the genesis of the Ukraine war - because I have read similar responses to what is shown on that transcript and it still doesn’t really make sense.
Like break it down by timeline and explain it to us like we are 12.
his comments on this subject: ukraine as it exists today was a creation of the ussr, most of its people russian, the ukranian revolution was the result of a long CIA operation meant to destabilize the country, move it towards nato, etc. Ukraine post revolution became very corrupt and began an effort in earnest to do away with all things russia, built up the one of the largest standing armies in europe, supplied with western weapons, etc. The russian population, particularly in the east, didn't agree, the adminstration clamped down, they revolted, were bombed etc. Putin has long advocated a responsiblity to care and protect Russians wherever they are in the world. In this case, he stated he had a responsibility to protect Russians in a former Russian state. and, he claimed they could not abide a large western army on it's doorstep.
edited to add: the three eastern provinces states held referendums regarding rejoining the russian federation. if you believe the results, 90+ percent voted yes. afterwards, russian congress voted to accept all three. putin's position today is that those provinces are now part of Russia.
