Finally saw it last night. Honestly, I've been putting it off because I saw the previews and it was pitched as sort of a zany crime caper, and I tend to think those movies are fun for 30 minutes, and then I run out of popcorn.

So I wasn't just pleasantly surprised, I was compeltely blown away that although it is technically a comedy, In Bruges is a pretty dark movie with some terrific characters and great dramatic moments. It's a study in both the possibility of redemption and the difficulty of living by a moral code. And in the end, it is a movie about hope or the lack thereof, depending on the character).

I really enjoyed it. i can see now why its showing up on year end lists.

SPOILERS

OK, the ending is almost a blatant rip off of Drugstore Cowboy. Even down to the point of view shot in the ambulance. I don't think that detracts from the movie, particularly the added element of the complete ambiguity over whether he lives or dies. I'd like to think he lives, though I know that is grossly unlikely. the scene is important because he HOPES he will live. So whether he lives or dies is irrelevent in the end, it is the fact he put away the suicidal tendencies and accepted what he has done. And he finally has hope. A pretty powerful scene. And not one I was expecting when I sat down to wtach what I thought would be a zany comedy.

I've been wanting to watch this movie, but couldn't convince my woman to watch it with me. Only after Farrell won the GG on Sunday did she finally capitulate.

Wow. Not what I expected in the best possible way. And Farrell was exceptional. I was stunned by his performance.

The movie was the furthest thing from the Pulp Fiction type crime-comedy that it was said to be in the early reviews I read. It was, as you said, Baloo, a meditation on redemption, honor and fate.

SPOILERS

One thing that struck me is, Gleason tells Farrell that he can't save anyone by dying, yet he does exactly that, he saves Farrell by giving his life.

I also was taken with the contemplation of violent acts and the collateral damage that can result. The little boy, certainly, but also the midget, the threat of it to the pregnant woman, the drug dealer and her boyfriend, the Canadians; all caught up either in direct, sudden and intentional violence or in the wake of it.

It is certainly one of the better movies I've seen this year. Are ruminations on chaos (The Dark Knight) and violence (In Bruges)signs of the times? I think possibly.

I too was surprised at how dark it was. It didn't take itself seriously, but it was disturbingly dark. How can one film meet both of those qualities? I really don't know, but In Bruges just did it.

It was almost "Confederacy of Dunces" meets "The Departed"....I'm still a little amazed at how solid of a film it was. Maybe the best of 2008, but I hesitate to put it past "Slumdog" in terms of a complete film. Definitely the best comedy, even though its no traditional comedy.

I bought this movie w/out previewing it beforehand. I greatly enjoy the movie. Colin F's best performance, IMHO.

bump

Just had a chance to watch this yesterday. Holy shite. What a pleasant surprise. I can't remember a time that I've been so caught off guard by a movie.

I totally agree with the great reviews in this thread by Baloo, mojo, and Stewie.

Definitely in my top 2 or 3 for the year and a must see for anyone who hasn't caught it yet.

Some pretty shocking "ultraviolence", almost of the "Kill Bill" variety in their over-the-top-ness, so be prepared for a couple of bloody scenes.

Same here, I think it is my top movie of the year.

SPOILERS

Fiennes' look in the end before he offs himself is perfect, and just tops off the movie so well.

Yeah, I'm still trying to rank them, but its in contention for my #1.

I looked up the Director, and this was his first feature length film, which makes the way this all comes together even more impressive.

He did win the Oscar in 2006 for Best Live Action Short Film, though, for "Six Shooter". Sounds really cool, and I wish they would have included that on the bonus materials of the disk. I would have liked to see that.
