Commercial vehicles get absolutely arse fricked in court for minor fender benders.

Having dash cams facing the road I don't have much problem with, and provide ample evidence in the vast majority of cases to determine who is at fault. But to have a camera facing the driver and recording audio seldom would provide more context and evidence that would benefit the company. Employers are using them to watch their employees.

There's a lot more going on than that. Most of these have accelerometers and some are hooked into the OBD to measure braking, throttle position, etc. The driver facing camera catches a lot more than just the driver. They can see out the drivers side window, and in a lot of trucks out the back in case you're rear ended. Additionally, most of the decent ones are using AI to identify drivers without seatbelts, using their phone, etc. to flag any unsafe drivers.

If anyone has time to pull and watch these videos there's a bigger problem. I'm sure it does happen but every fleet i know that uses them only downloads and reviews for accidents or egregious behavior flags.

Who do you think has the time to watch all this footage? I'm an employer that has a camera and its because I should have fired my employee 3 months ago for continuing to smoke in the vehicle among other things, none of which are terrible. The only way I can watch it is if I'm close enough to the camera to bluetooth download it, which is almost never.

For the vast majority of good employees if you don't act a fool normally you'll never get caught.
