I had one legit commit suicide once. It was on the shoulder coming up on a four-way stop, far enough away from it to where I was already slowing down, but still going 45-50. It was just after dark, so I didn't see it too early, but I remember seeing it look back at me in the car, look across the road, and then, at the last second, step out in front of me and stop. BAM! There was no chance to avoid it.
I was in my Mom's white 1999 Chevy Malibu. I/we didn't think it did any real damage until a few days later it started overheating. The bumper hit it, and it rolled straight under the car. I don't think any tires ever hit it, but it did push the radiator back at the bottom and somehow managed to kink the hose just enough to cause a problem.
I never did convince my parents that the damn dog committed suicide and it was unavoidable.
