I think with Mardi Gras, there's a sense of community and everyone in the city coming together to celebrate a common, non-political cause. The floats and beads are for the kids while the adults can hang out together, listen to the band music, and socialize.
I've often felt this way about a city like Nashville, though. What makes it such a happening city compared to other places? The traffic is horrible and after a weekend on Broadway, you've kind of seen what there is to see in the city.
And if you don't like drinking and country music that much, what is there even to do in a city like Nashville?
