Many places are moving to the "unlimited vacation" model.
I mean once you get to certain roles and levels, that's pretty much what it is anyway, but yes i've heard of this model. I'm sure my European company will be going to this soon as well.
I work from home. I don't officially take off for 3 hours b/c i left to go get my kid from school and bring him to an appointment. I don't officially take off half a day when i leave early at 1 on a friday. Now if things were busy and i couldn't afford to leave early that day, then i simply wouldn't, and i've missed appointments for my kids b/c thigns popped up. When you have a boss that respects you and knows you are getting the job done, then most aren't going to give a shite about you taking a few hours off during normal working hours. It's not like you get paid overtime when you're doing work at 9pm on friday night, or at 6am on a sunday morning.
Do your work, have good results, and you'll have freedom to do whatever you want.
Basically, be a professional. We all understand we have shite going on in our lives, from dealing with kids issues, or even parent issues if they are elderly and sick. As long as it doesn't affect your work, then it shouldn't matter, adn if that means having to get work done during weird hours, then so be it. That's what being a professional is.
