Had an uncle in the 101st during WWII that was a great human being but until his death had his demons (alcoholism). Poor soul died from the terrible complications of alzhiemers.

One of my everylasting memories was a comment he made while I was visiting with him in the nursing home...while in the commons area of the NH, he looked around at all the other folks in the NH and with the dull stare of dementia he said "this sure is a nice barracks, damn shame all these boys want be coming home". Still chills me to my bones.

And yes, Speirs was one bad arse dude. Hopefully he went out peacefully, but with all he had been through, seen and done, I doubt it.
