Going to Savannah for the first time

Any recommendations for a couple in their early 40s? My wife is into haunts and cemeteries. I'm into all sorts of historical things. We will be driving in from Atlanta and not opposed to making pit stops along the way.

If you've never driven it, be prepared for the most interminably boring stretch of interstate you've ever seen (and I've driven I-10 coast to coast).

You are going to the right place. I have been on several ghost tours there. My favorite was the walking tour, not the carriage tour. Although a carriage tour in the daytime that is less ghost and more history tour is a must, in my opinion. I've done Boneventure too, I recommend a guide otherwise you are just kind of wandering around a cemetery not knowing what you are looking at, or who was a signer of the declaration of independence, all the significant stuff isn't marked, a guide would have to point it out.
Go ahead and make reservations for dinner at Olde Pink House. They are booked out weeks in advance.
Savannah is an open container city so you can walk around and enjoy the town with a beer.
Bring mosquito spray. All the beautiful squares are infested with mosquitos. As is Wormsloe plantation if that's a destination.

But every minute you spend in Macon is a minute you don't get in Savannah. I'd rather have that minute in Savannah.

Drive out to The Crab Shack on Tybee Island for low country boil.
Check out Bar Julian at the Thompson (rooftop bar).

If you are staying long enough for an excursion day, it's only a 2.5 hour drive to the Okefenokee Swamp on the Folkston GA side, where you can book a swamp tour. Then drive into St. Mary's and eat some seafood on the St. Mary's River for a late lunch, then drive the 2 hours back to Savannah, have a nice dinner somewhere. Granted it's 5 hours in a car that day, but you will have toured the Okefenokee and experienced some lowcountry charm in St. Mary's to make it worth it. You can even stay a night in St. Mary's at any one of their Air BnB's and take a ferry in the morning to Cumberland Island (reservations required, bring mosquito spray) and it's really awesome, it's where Carnegie had his mansion and the ruins are still there, look up Dungeness. Don't miss the ferry taking you back to St. Mary's, then drive the 2 hours back to Savannah.

Thanks for the tips. We should be in the Savannah area for 3 nights. Booking a condo at Tybee Island for a great price.

I'm not a Tybee fan. If you keep your expectations low, you'll probably have a good time. In my experience, it's better to stay in Savannah and make a day on Tybee than the other way around. But everyone has different opinions.

Do the Fort Pulaski tour if you like history.

It's just about price. The AirBnB and VRBO options are more expensive in Savannah proper than Tybee. I don't mind driving back and forth.

Worth grabbing a lunch at H&H Soul Food in Macon. It's an historical diner in downtown Macon, famous for having a close relationship with the Allman Bros Band. Fantastic food, great tunes playing, still has that old diner feel, and has a ton of great memorabilia up on the walls.

You might when you find out it’s a single two lane road connecting the city and the beach that has been known to flood at high tide…

I’m going to Savannah in March - what restaurants or activities should I plan to see?
