In Jewish families it’s common to say “ my family “ when referring to Aunts, uncles, cousins , siblings etc who stayed behind. Maybe Grandpa got on a boat after a pogrom in a “ pale of settlement “ sometime in the late 19th century or early 20th century when the Russians would slaughter them outside Lódz or Odessa. They became successful in NYC or Miami but his family that stayed behind was all murdered in the Holocaust.

That’s a poorly worded way of saying most Ashkenazi Jews have a family branch that was sent to death camps in the 1939-1945 era while their grandfather was safe somewhere. It’s still part of their family story, Grandpa was just a lucky one.

That said, frick Adam Schiff and of course he’s a liar. He’s the most prolific liar I’ve ever seen. A horrible human being.
