It's to supplement the low pay.
The marketplace says journalist aren't that important or scarce. Which is why they don't get paid high salaries (except for a very few at the very top of the profession). Just look at local news. TV and print. It's now all a bunch of young kids who look like they just graduated from high school. That's because the business can't afford to pay middle-aged journalist a salary commensurate with they experience/needs. So in order to work for such low pay there has to be some other intrinsic "value". That value is a vastly inflated sense of self-worth. "No, I don't get paid a lot, but I'm very important. It's my responsibility to educate the dumb masses and shape society in the right way!"
