I'll second what everyone is saying and try to fly into Florence and spend time there.
There's no way you can make it to Sorrento/Amalfi coast and back in 36 hours and have any kind of enjoyable experience.
You could also take a day trip and visit somewhere like Orvieto or potentially even make it up to Assisi or Perugia. Those are relatively short train rides from Rome. That would be doable in 2 days.
