The M3 Lee, officially Medium Tank, M3, was an American medium tank used during World War II. The turret was produced in two forms, one for US needs and one modified to British requirements to place the radio next to the commander. In British Commonwealth service, the tank was called by two names: tanks employing US pattern turrets were called "Lee", named after Confederate general Robert E. Lee, while those with British pattern turrets were known as "Grant", named after Union general Ulysses S. Grant.

Dang man, you do good work.

I remember seeing an old movie with Humphrey Bogart where they held off a whole German battalion at a water source.

Great movie.

They remade it and it was also a great movie.

That tank gave the Germans and their new up gunned PZ III and IV a startle for sure.

I wanted to add that I don't know why the British took off the upper cupola machine gun claiming it was too tall.

The whole tank was too tall. Still the basis of the running gear of the Sherman and it was the best we had at that time.

Thanks. Glad you like it.

Its sponson-mounted 75mm did give the American & British tankers a gun that could deal with any Axis armor, at least until the Germans shipped Tigers into North Africa. But, due to the mounting configuration of the 75 on the M3, it had to expose virtually the entire vehicle to engage the enemy.

Brother I could talk endlessly about WW2 armor, tactics etc.

I was enthralled at an early age about German armor and light armor vehicles. I should have been a tanker for sure.

Edit to add: again, your models are just amazing. More patience than I have.

Yeah it was speedy but looked outdated new.

Good work, Vader

It was outdated new. The USA had nothing better on hand.

We had the little Stuart but we were still dicking around with multiple machine guns when the Germans were putting short barrel 75 mm in their PZ IV.

Funny thing is that with all of our issues coming up to speed the British were still worse.

I’ve always loved tanks. I think it’s because I found out my grandfather (he died before I was born) was a tanker in WWII. That’s why when I enlisted, there was no questioning what MOS I’d go into, 19Kilo Armor Crewman.

The problem is we had neglected tank development after WWI. Part of that is because of the strong isolationist feelings in the US. The American people didn’t want to get sucked into another European war. This, as far as national defense was concerned, the emphasis was placed on the Navy and the Army Air Corps.

Well we neglected the whole military.

Now we just flush money to the military down the drain but that is a poli-board topic.

Not saying I do not appreciate you military guys, talking about specials projects and waste.

I look at it as kinda pathetic and funny at the same time. They don’t like my thread, but they’re too much of a pussy to come out and say it so they leave their sad little down vote and sulk away. I’d at least have a bit of respect for them if they’d come out and say what they find objectionable.

That is the movie.

You are right, that movie for it's day was dang good. Hell even today it is good.

Darth don't worry about these down voters because they are little pansies that never identify themselves.

Sorry History hurts your little feelings down voters, it happened and you never mattered.

I’m not entirely sure. I think it’s somewhere around 150 or so?
