I hunt Area 7 in st mary parish. Our bow season started Sept 16. Hot, humid and millions of mosquitoes aint my or anyone I know, idea of a good time. Our gun season starts Oct 15 or so. Again, its hot and humid and buggy for at least a month. And out gun season ends Dec 31 while bow season ended Jan 15. Literally a mile across the Atchafalaya river is area 9. Their gun season goes from around Nov 20 - Jan 20 and bow extends until at least the end of January. We been pleading with the folks in baton rouge to be more like Area 9. Give me less days but better conditions 100% of the time.

If you look at the estimated deer breeding season for any of our deer areas they coincide almost perfectly with to maximize your time afield for
The rut

Deer in st mary parish are primarily marsh deer and Will rut earlier than the bottomland hardwood deer along major rivers

If you start the season a month later in st mary parish you are missing out on the rut

Most people can't understand St Mary Parish though where the rut in marsh is 4 months different even though the deer are only separated by hwy 90. I know the reason why it is like this but not really describing that now.

To the other comments I don't think seasons are set to maximize the kill but I bet most of you get to hunt the rut. Alot of times we don't it is after rifle season.
