At one time I had a group of 4 direct reports. I had 3 peers who each had 4 direct reports. So, our groups had a combined 16 reporting employees servicing 4 regions of the US. Our director asked us to rate our groups of 4 from 1-4. Then rate them in total 1-16. My 4 were in the consensus top 8.

Our director said we each needed to lose 1 person and threw the consensus 16 data out. So, my group had to take a loss even though my people were in the top 50%. It pissed me off since one peer had consensus 15 and 16 and should had lost those 2 people.
Essentially it was a straight line 25% cut across the board just to reduce headcount. Grrrrrrr…..
