If you were building a perfect coach, which attributes from existing coaches would you want him to have?

From Urban Meyer - use of talent
Pete Carrol - recruiting
Nick Saban - Defense,X and O's
Mike Leach - offensive scheme
Jim Tressel - public relations/media
Bob Stoops - consistency
Tommy Tuberville - big game coach

Mack Brown - For the most part keeping players to stay their senior year. Only 3 to leave under him at Texas are VY, Jamaal Charles and JerMichael Finley

Mike Leach is one dimensional.

I hate to say it, but Urban Meyer seems to have it all: recruiting, innovative thinking, excellent coaching skills (and what he doesn't have his assistants have—Strong and Mullen are outstanding and their other ACs must be pretty damn good as well. I know, Mullen's gone ...).

Meyer's the one SEC guy I'd pick over Les: he's an a-hole but he's gonna produce top teams for some time to come—and I can't see him ever going to the NFL, so we're stuck with him for awhile.

Public Relations/Media: Saban

It was much better when our coach just told all the fans and the media to screw off and did his own thing.

Are you serious???

He's the most overrated actual coach in the country. He loses a game to a pathetic team every freakin' year and plays in the worst conference in college football.

I agree with this.

I like Les as a game day coach.
I like Saban as a recruiter and program builder, not and X's and O's guy. Saban is all about getting the program to the "next level." In any given game he is sorta average.

You have to like Pete Carroll
recruiter
program builder
consistency
game day

Kind of like a mellow, cool version of Saban, probably a notch better.

heh, right. Seems I had forgotten about y'alls' beef with USC. :)

You should set up a home and home. They generally seem willing to play anybody and schedule more big name OOC opponents than anyone else, by far. I seem to recall them stomping the SEC-W champs 2 years ago....

I think on average USC plays the toughest schedules around. But then I respect the PAC-10 - they are weak this year though.

they do schedule some of the best OOC games every year. But, they play zero big games inside of their conference. One good OOC game does not make up for the 9 pathetic Pac10 games and Notre Dame.

On the other hand, other conferences actually have more than one team that has accomplished something in the last 10 years.

This is so true!! Living in the LA area, though, I can tell you everyone around here [ok, most fans anyway] thinks this guy can walk on water. Never mind the loss to Stanford last year, and the loss to a pathetic UCLA team the year before. {would seem to me being on the losing end of one of the greatest, if not the greatest upsets ever and being considered a great coach is a bit contradictory)

Actually, I do think that in spite of his team's almost yearly loss to a lesser opponent, he is a great coach, and is very polished. I just love watching how his view of the BSC changes each year depending on whether it favors USC or not.
