Tool (Click-bait-ish) - A New Undertow Type Album Appealing Idea

The band did an interview with Revolver mostly about their Power Trip show. I haven't read the interview yet, but I saw this pull-quote making the click-bait rounds, but it is an interesting thought for sure.

quote:

"Our filter system is pretty intense. If it gets by the four of us in the band, then we figure it's going to work," says Carey. "It's a really painstaking process that we go through to finish [an album], and get it where we are all completely convicted.

"It pays off in the long run because we never really get tired of performing our songs. It gives rise to a vehicle that we can all believe in."

That doesn't mean the overall direction, or epic length, of Fear Inoculum offers any clues about the future. "Who knows? It could flip-flop and we could just go back to doing an Undertow [type of] record" of shorter songs, says Carey. "That's kind of appealing to me. I always like change, whatever direction it goes."

The other thing I thought was an interesting possibility...

quote:

They are flirting with the idea of releasing an EP rather than a full album, putting 30 minutes of music into the world sooner than later, rather than Fear Inoculum's long-delayed 90. Each one of them have contributed musical ideas, and Carey says, "it's going well so far."

"We're free agents now," he adds. "We aren't signed to a label anymore. We are free to do whatever we want."

I would love this. Undertow is my favorite album by them. Heavier, shorter, kick-arse songs would be a good change, IMO.

Great, if they do an EP we’ll get it in 10 more years instead of 15.

The past few things I've seen from Danny suggest they are aware of their age and want shite faster. Maynard has seemingly mastered the modern way to milk money from releases based on how Puscifer releases everything remixed, reworked, and live. They'd be foolish not to cash in on lots of small releases now that they aren't under a record contract.

Danny has always been the most optimistic. It seemed like he said they were almost finished with the last record for a decade.

I’m guessing he’s just referring to song length and not musical style. Theres nothing bad about their 12 minute song lengths as long as it serves a point: solos, jams, mood building, tension, crescendos, etc, that they can do so well, but some of their most recent albums, do seem a to have quite a bit of fluff, pointlessly long, disjointed intros and outros that don’t really support the overall song or album. And then there’s Mockingbeat. There is artistic room to tighten it up a bit. But, that’s really not who they are and that’s fine.
I would enjoy hearing them give a go at a more old school, grungier, less produced style like Opiate and Undertow… but at the same time, anyone can do that, so perhaps keep doing what they do.

In the meantime, I wish Danny would just release a Chocolate Chip Trip style drum solo album.

I assume this is the case, and mostly the reason I titled it "click-bait-ish." Maynard is about to turn 60. There's something icky about a 60 year old trying to capture the same level of angst as a 20 year old in lyrics. They can still get a dark and brooding sound, but Paul's bass was so thick and heavy on Undertow. I cut my musical teeth on that album, and I think it's the reason that most other "metal" sounds so thin to me. I like a lotta bass
