According to NPR about 50% of middle-aged men have NO close friends outside of family. It is pretty damned common. I have 2 friends that I have known since I was in my late teens but we aren't close...I talk to them a couple of times a year over the phone and see them a couple of times a year. I have lots of "acquantainces" that I fish and hunt with but we aren't close...between a wife, kids and work most of us do not have time to nurture a friendship.
