“I informed Philip today he would not be retained as our offensive coordinator,” Hugh Freeze said in a statement. “Philip is a good coach and a good man. Decisions like this are never easy, however, I decided this is best for our program moving forward. I’m appreciative of his efforts this past year and wish him nothing but the best.”

We reportedly looking at Derrick Nix from Ole Miss to be OC, suggesting that Freeze will take over game planning full time and Nix will head up offensive recruiting.

So fired because he is the scapegoat? Everyone knows Freeze runs that offense.

No Monty actually was running the offense. Freeze said from the start he was going to hand it over to him so he could focus on recruiting and rebuilding.

Freeze has repeatedly and publicly declared he was not running it for most of the season. It's been a weird ride.
There were a lot of questions as to whether Hugh would give up play calling when Monty came on board and eventually it was announced he had. Throughout the year he (Hugh) would specifically insinuate he had been calling plays or more involved during Auburn's more successful moments, and would disown the poorer ones, usually directly blaming it on recruiting.
I assume it's all true or close enough to truth as, seems like a hard lie to get away with without getting major blowback, but it was still pretty odd to witness.

Derrick Nix? LOL I mean I get Hugh will basically be the OC but still

Most insiders seem to be in agreement that Hugh wants someone who can recruit well so that he can concentrate on playcalling duties. Nix seems to fit the bill well.
