I think it started way back when they walked to Canaan and told everyone living there it was there land and fought a bunch of wars to claim it.

Then whenever they were conquered they refused to honor or accept any of their conquerors gods and constantly rebelled against control.

They were some of the earliest groups of people to stare down oppressors and say “you’re not better than me”.
