I've been keeping a personal budget in excel since 2012. When I started doing it I had basic categories like yourself but now I've treated it more like a trend report for a business. I have a few large headings with subcategories beneath them.

Housing
Mortgage
Homeowners Insurance
Property Tax

Utilities
Power
Water and Sewer
Phone
Gas Service
Cable and internet

Transportation
Gas
Car Service
Car Insurance
Flights
Lodging
Parking/Rideshare

Investments
Brokerage
Roth
Crypto

Consumables
Food
Groceries
Alcohol
Bar

Miscellaneous
Sport/event Sites
Childcare
Gifts
Church
Entertainment
Gas station
Clothes
Hair
Medical
Other

Nice list. (although my personality desires to know none of this)

Just curious, what's the difference in Alcohol versus Bar?

Gin versus olives?

ETA: My GF promptly answered my dumbass question. Beer from walmart versus beer from Fat Cat Saloon

I keep a spreadsheet just like this one. It could easily be a word doc. I keep it granular like this with dates to make sure they are forecasting on YNAB for the next month. Helps me keep an eye on running balances.
