What none of these rankings numbers can calibrate are what's happening in the discussions between the recruits and coaches. They also can't calibrate what happens in the locker room. They also can't calibrate how the recruit meshes with the other recruits and existing talent. I'm pretty sure they don't have an ability to assess a recruits motor.

A good way to assess 3 star recruits is their offer lists. Guys who camp at a school or show real potential to develop will get offers from bigger P5 programs. So here are our 3 star commits offers (according to On3):
Ory Williams (OL)- Texas, A&M, UF
Kahyree Lee (OL)- State, OM, FSU, Texas
PJ Woodland (CB)- OM, Tulane, Texas, Auburn
De'Myrion Johnson (DL)- Okie St, A&M, Bama, UF
Shone Washington (DL)- OM, State, Arkansas, Colorado
Ahamad Breaux (DL)- LA Tech, OM, Grambling, Mizzou
Bernard Causey (CB)- Illinois, Nebraska, OM, Texas Tech
Wallace Foster (CB)- Tulane, State, FSU, UF
Joseph Cryer (OL)- OM, Okie St, Mizzou, Nebraska
We all know that not all of these offers were commitable. However, the lists still show the level of interest that a recruit has drawn. If multiple SEC teams and top P5 programs are looking at them, then you know you have a prospect who other respected staffs also see something in.
Some of these offer lists are very strong. But I can’t lie. There are two or three that definitely have reach potential. In the case of Causey, it’s a position of great need. In the case of Cryer, sometimes you have to trust your coaching staff. Based on the success Brad Davis has had, if he sees potential, then I trust his evaluation.
It’s also interesting to note some of the programs that others may scoff at or ignore. For example, I don’t see a Tulane offer as a bad thing at all. Their defense has been incredibly solid and has held up well against P5 competition the last two years.
