This appears to be a lame move on NBC's part. If it was part of his deal, why not let him do it?
It'd be one wild card game, not the Super Bowl or anything. Doing this a month before the playoffs is weird timing, too.

Al Michaels have always butt heads with NBC’s top executives since they moved him to Thur, he probably finally said something unforgivable.
