Right?
I agree with you that the Dodgers and Yankees have proven you can’t buy World Series titles. Which is why you know this $700 million investment is way bigger than just wins and losses.
BUT, I just read that “the majority” of the contract will be deferred. Which means more than $350 million due to him after the 10 years. So, at most, he’s gonna be getting just under $35 million/year for the next 10 years. Which is nothing for them. They’re still in a position to add more dudes. Money can’t necessarily buy championships, but it can buy playoff appearances. Be hard for the Dodgers not to at least make the playoffs for the foreseeable future. But they have been anyway. And anything can happen in a 5-game series. Which will probably lead to those rounds going to best out of 7 or a re-seeding after each round. Or both. MLB doesn’t want a 110-win Ohtani Dodgers team having a couple bad games and bowing out in the 1st round. Need those Asian eyeballs glued to the tv for as long as possible.

It also buys attention, and fans. I know the players don’t want a cap, but it’s a problem that the majority of the league has no chance of retaining a player like this.
The Chiefs can keep Mahomes. The Bucks can keep Giannis. The Royals and Brewers will never replicate that and I think that’s an issue for the league as a whole.
